A door that hangs straight and closes smoothly is one of those small things you feel every time you use it. When a door starts to stick in Tallahassee, it is usually a sign of moisture rather than the door itself, because exterior doors swell through the humid months, the frame moves with the home, and in older homes the opening was rarely square to begin with. Sometimes the fix is simply rehanging the door, and sometimes the jamb has softened at the bottom and the door is only the symptom. Kevin will look at it and tell you which one you have, so you are not paying for more than the job needs.

Doors are one of Kevin's specialties. We hang interior and exterior doors, replace entry doors that have swollen or rotted, build sliding barn doors, and fabricate one-off doors for closets and odd openings where nothing off the shelf will fit.

Our Door Installation Process

  1. Tell us about the door

Send the form or call and tell Amanda whether it is an interior, exterior or barn door, or an opening nothing off the shelf will fit. We get back to you within 24 hours.

  2. Door, frame or hardware

Kevin works out whether the problem is the door, the frame or the hardware before quoting, then sends a detailed estimate.

  3. Hung or built to the opening

Kevin and Lil Kevin hang the door, and when nothing off the shelf fits, Kevin builds one to the opening rather than forcing a standard size in and trimming around the gaps.

  4. Walk it together

We go through the finished door with you before we call the job done.

03 no surprises

A change order you approved is not a surprise

Older homes turn up the most, but even a newer one can hide something nobody could see at the estimate. That possibility is written into our estimates and proposals, and you sign it before anything starts. So when something does come up, the work stops, Kevin walks you through it, and it becomes a change order you approve, rather than something you find out about afterwards.

Door Installation Questions, Answered

General

My door sticks. Is that the door or the frame?

Usually the frame. In older homes the opening was rarely square to begin with, and settling plus Florida humidity swelling the door does the rest. Kevin works out whether it is the door, the frame or the hardware before quoting a fix.

Can you build a door to fit an odd opening?

Yes. When nothing off the shelf fits, Kevin fabricates the door to the opening rather than forcing a standard size in and trimming around the gaps. Hanging and building doors is one of his specialties.

Does the owner actually do the work?

Yes. Kevin is on every job. His son Lil Kevin works alongside him, and the person who prices your project is the person who builds it. There is no sales rep handing your job to a crew you have never met.

How big is your crew?

Three of us, and that is the whole company. Kevin and his son Lil Kevin are the two on site, and Amanda handles every call and inquiry. The two of them get through what a crew of four would.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

No, Lumber Lunatics works on homes rather than commercial buildings.

Pricing

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Kevin comes out and looks at the job with you and talks through the options. He does not price it on the spot, because materials and labor have to be worked out properly, so the detailed estimate comes to you afterwards. There is no charge and no obligation.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cash, check, zelle, and credit cards.

Trust

Is there a warranty on your work?

Yes. We provide a workmanship warranty on every project, with the specific terms spelled out in your written proposal before the work begins.

Do you handle plumbing and electrical work?

If your project needs major plumbing or electrical work, Kevin will tell you so and recommend you bring in a licensed plumber or electrician. He is not licensed for that work and he is not going to pretend otherwise. You will hear that at the estimate, not halfway through the job.

Are you insured?

Yes, Lumber Lunatics is insured on every project.

How far out are you booking?

Scheduling varies based on the scope of your project and our current workload. We will provide our current availability when we discuss your project.

Service Area

What areas do you serve?

Tallahassee and the surrounding Big Bend area, roughly an hour out. That includes Crawfordville, Quincy, Havana, Monticello, Midway, Blountstown, and Sneads. If you are near the edge of that, just ask.

Still have a question? Amanda comes back to you within 24 hours.
