01the possibilities

Make your deck safe, solid and ready to enjoy

Deck with metal balusters

Many older decks around Tallahassee have been exposed to years of sun, rain and humidity. Over time, deck boards, stairs and railings can deteriorate even when some of the framing underneath is still in good condition. That can make the difference between repairing or resurfacing a deck and needing to rebuild it. Kevin personally evaluates the condition of the deck and the visible framing before recommending the best approach. On low decks, some of the framing cannot be fully evaluated until the existing deck boards are removed. If additional damage is uncovered, we will let you know what needs attention before moving forward.

We build new decks, repair existing decks and resurface decks when the framing is sound. Our deck framing is built with pressure-treated wood, with your choice of pressure-treated wood or composite decking. Stairs, railings and framing can also be repaired or rebuilt as needed. If an existing deck is too deteriorated to make resurfacing a good option, we will tell you and recommend rebuilding instead. Every project is built and fitted on site to suit your home and space.

Send the form or call and tell Amanda whether it is a new deck, a repair or a resurface. We get back to you within 24 hours.

  2. Kevin checks the framing

Kevin looks at the deck in person and checks the framing. If it has held up, new decking can go on the frame you already have, and if it is too far gone, he tells you and recommends rebuilding. Then he sends a detailed estimate.

  3. Built and fitted on site

Kevin and Lil Kevin build it on site to suit your home, with pressure treated framing and your choice of pressure treated or composite decking.

Some of our custom decks

A few of the projects we photographed. We do not get a picture of every job we finish.

  • New brown composite deck wrapping the back corner of a home, ending at a white roofed porch with white railings

Brown composite deck along the home

Brown composite decking run along the side of the home to a white porch, picture framed all the way around, with one corner cut at an angle.

    Custom Decks
  • New pressure treated deck, stairs and handrail at a back door, with the posts and framing left exposed underneath

    Deck, stairs and handrail

Stairs and a graspable rail off a back door, part of a deck Kevin rebuilt from the framing up. The posts and joists underneath are the part nobody photographs and the part that decides how long it lasts.

    Custom Decks
  • Two level pressure treated platform deck along the back of a white sided home, the upper level stepping down to a lower level beside the patio

    Two level platform deck

Two levels stepping down along the back of the home, low enough that no rail is needed. A good answer when a raised deck would tower over a small yard.

04 no surprises

A change order you approved is not a surprise

Older homes turn up the most, but even a newer one can hide something nobody could see at the estimate. That possibility is written into our estimates and proposals, and you sign it before anything starts. So when something does come up, the work stops, Kevin walks you through it, and it becomes a change order you approve, rather than something you find out about afterwards.

Custom Decks Questions, Answered

General

Can you resurface my deck instead of rebuilding it?

Usually, yes. On most decks the framing has held up and it is the boards, stairs and railings that have gone, so new decking goes on the frame you already have. If the frame is genuinely finished, Kevin will say so rather than putting good boards on a bad deck.

Treated wood or composite for a deck?

The framing is pressure treated wood every time. The choice is in the surface, treated decking or composite over the top. Composite costs more up front and asks for less afterwards, which in this climate is worth putting on the table.

Does the owner actually do the work?

Yes. Kevin is on every job. His son Lil Kevin works alongside him, and the person who prices your project is the person who builds it. There is no sales rep handing your job to a crew you have never met.

How big is your crew?

Three of us, and that is the whole company. Kevin and his son Lil Kevin are the two on site, and Amanda handles every call and inquiry. The two of them get through what a crew of four would.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

No, Lumber Lunatics works on homes rather than commercial buildings.

Pricing

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Kevin comes out and looks at the job with you and talks through the options. He does not price it on the spot, because materials and labor have to be worked out properly, so the detailed estimate comes to you afterwards. There is no charge and no obligation.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cash, check, zelle, and credit cards.

Trust

Is there a warranty on your work?

Yes. We provide a workmanship warranty on every project, with the specific terms spelled out in your written proposal before the work begins.

Do you handle plumbing and electrical work?

If your project needs major plumbing or electrical work, Kevin will tell you so and recommend you bring in a licensed plumber or electrician. He is not licensed for that work and he is not going to pretend otherwise. You will hear that at the estimate, not halfway through the job.

Are you insured?

Yes, Lumber Lunatics is insured on every project.

How far out are you booking?

Scheduling varies based on the scope of your project and our current workload. We will provide our current availability when we discuss your project.

Service Area

What areas do you serve?

Tallahassee and the surrounding Big Bend area, roughly an hour out. That includes Crawfordville, Quincy, Havana, Monticello, Midway, Blountstown, and Sneads. If you are near the edge of that, just ask.

Still have a question? Amanda comes back to you within 24 hours.
