Handrails and Stairs in Havana, FL
Handrails, stair rebuilds and porch steps, built to be sturdy and to last outdoors.
Handrails and Stairs in Havana, keeping what is worth keeping
Havana's older homes have often had their porch steps replaced at least once already. When you redo them, the useful question is what the last set was built from and why it did not last, because that decides how the next set should be built. Kevin builds the new set to sit solid underfoot, and where the rail and balusters are still sound, he keeps them and replaces just the steps.
Havana sits about fifteen minutes north of Tallahassee, in Gadsden County, so it is an easy trip for us.
Porch steps, stair treads and handrails see a lot of use and a lot of weather, and they are worth keeping solid. We rebuild porch steps and stair treads, set and anchor railing posts to hold real weight, and replace rails and balusters on decks where they have gone soft. Railing posts that were not secured properly will loosen over time whatever the rail on top looks like, so that is where the work goes. Most of these are one or two day jobs, and Kevin evaluates each one himself before starting.

So happy to have found & worked with Lumber Lunatics. Kevin and his son did an exceptional job in replacing our outdated banister. It was hard to find the right person for the job but Kevin was great! Professional and attentive to detail as well as clean up. Thank you!

Handrails and Stairs in Havana Questions
My railing feels loose. Is that a real safety issue?
It can be. Railing posts that were not secured properly will fail over time whatever the rail on top of them looks like, so that is where Kevin starts. He sets and anchors posts to hold real weight.
Can you rebuild worn porch or deck steps?
Yes. Kevin rebuilds porch steps and stair treads and replaces rails and balusters that have gone soft. On an older home the wear usually shows at the base, where the steps meet the ground and stay damp.
Can this be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes, and we will tell you when it is the better choice. Repairing sound wood is usually less expensive than replacing it, so where a repair will do the job we say so, and where you would rather update it we do that instead. It comes down to what you want for the room and what is genuinely sound underneath.
Can you match new work to the existing style of an older home?
Yes. When working on an older home, we take the existing style, trim, dimensions, and details into consideration. When possible, we match or recreate those features so the new work blends naturally with the character of the home.
